3 Ways to Start Saving Money Today

From: Joy SummersYou know EVERYTHING seems to be more expensive theses days. If you are anything like me, then you are trying to be smart about how to spend less. Saving money doesn’t have to mean making huge lifestyle changes—sometimes it’s the small, consistent habits that make the biggest difference. If you’re looking for practical ways to stretch your budget, here are three simple strategies that are helping me right now:
1. Earn fuel points when you get gas
One easy way to save is by being strategic about where you fill up. Grocery stores like Kroger offer fuel rewards programs that let you earn points on everyday purchases. Those points turn into discounts at the pump, which can really add up over time—especially if you’re already shopping there for groceries. I have learned that my Kroger gives 4xs the fuel points if you order your groceries on Fridays so that is my new day. I save up the points and wait until our SUV is almost empty and then use them all to get a much cheaper fill up at the Kroger gas station.
2. Start couponing at drugstores
Stores like CVS, Walgreens, and Dollar General are some of the best places to begin couponing. The key is learning how to stack store rewards with manufacturer coupons to maximize savings. It might feel overwhelming at first, but following couponing influencers can help you learn the system faster. Over time, you’ll also notice patterns—like which weeks your go-to items go on sale—so you can stock up at the lowest prices. Since it’s 2026 this does require you to download the store app and then to clip coupons there to be applied at the register. I have asked a lot of questions of store employees to try to start learning how it works at each store.
3. Use grocery pickup to avoid impulse spending
If you’ve ever walked into a store for “just a few things” and left with a full cart, you’re not alone. Grocery pickup can help eliminate that temptation. When I order online, I’m more likely to stick to what I need and avoid grabbing extras from eye-catching displays or end caps that are designed to make us spend more. It’s a simple shift that can lead to noticeable savings.
Saving money doesn’t require perfection—just a few smarter choices repeated over time. Start with one or two of these habits, and you’ll likely see the difference in your budget sooner than you think.
