Proof God Can Use Jello Salad to Make Someone Feel Seen

One of the things I love most about WayFM is that we never really know which moments God is going to use to reach someone.

Sometimes it’s a powerful song. Sometimes it’s a conversation about faith. And sometimes, it’s something as simple as Jell-O salad.

Recently, I was on the air talking about growing up in the backwoods of West Virginia and laughing about the kind of “salad” my mama would bring to cookouts. If you’re from where I’m from, you know there’s usually whipped cream involved and very little that’s actually healthy about it. It was just a lighthearted moment I hoped would make people smile during their holiday weekend.

Later that day, I received an email from a listener named Leslie.

She told me she had WayFM playing in the background, but she honestly wasn’t paying much attention. Then she heard me say the phrase “backwoods of West Virginia.”

“That’s where I’m from,” she wrote.

She turned the radio up.

Leslie shared that she’s been going through a difficult season. She’s been missing home and feeling isolated. But hearing someone on the radio who understood a piece of her story reminded her that she wasn’t alone.

In her words, “Something as simple as a connection through the airwaves to a fellow West Virginian reminded me that God is with me.”

I was so moved reading that email because it reminded me of something we see over and over again at WayFM: God uses everything.

He uses the worship songs. He uses conversations about faith. He uses prayer. But He also uses ordinary moments, laughter, memories, and even goofy stories about cookout food to remind people that He sees them and cares about them.

I truly believe God is programming this radio station in ways we could never orchestrate ourselves. He knows exactly who needs to hear what — and when they need to hear it.
