Spreading Joy: Thanking our Local Heroes

We are spreading the joy together all summer long with random acts of kindness. If you missed the full list of ideas, I have them here. This week, the invitation was to thank your local heros! When I pulled up to the fire station with a dozen donuts, I thought I was simply dropping off a small thank-you. What I didn't expect was the incredible welcome I received in return.
The firefighters were so kind and generous with their time. They invited all of us inside and I was giddy to get a small glimpse into what their everyday life looks like.
I got to hold one of their axes, try on some of the heavy protective gear, wear the oxygen tank they carry into burning buildings, and climb on one of the fire trucks. Felt like I was 5 years old again. It was fascinating—and humbling.
I was shocked by how heavy everything was. Just putting on the gear made me appreciate the physical strength their job requires. Then I started thinking about what it's like to wear all of that while running into a burning building, searching for someone in danger, making split-second decisions, and staying calm under unimaginable pressure.
Their job isn't just physically demanding. It's mentally exhausting, too. Every call could be completely different from the last, and every decision matters. On top of that, I can't imagine the emotional weight they carry after witnessing people on some of the hardest days of their lives.
I left the fire station with a deeper appreciation for the men and women who choose to serve our communities every single day. They don't do it for applause or recognition. They simply answer the call, over and over again.
I hope you will join me in spreading the joy this week by thanking our local heroes! Maybe it's your neighborhood firefighters, a police officer, an EMT, or another first responder. It doesn't have to be donuts. A handwritten note, a small treat, or simply taking a moment to say, "Thank you for what you do," can mean more than you know.
Showing kindness is a great way to share the love of Jesus. Let's see how far we can spread it together!
