When You Can't Sleep and Your Mind Won't Be Quiet

When You Can't Sleep and Your Mind Won't Be Quiet

I'm not sure what your brain does when you can't sleep, but mine is not always a good friend to me.

The other night, I woke up around 3:00 a.m. and couldn't fall back asleep. I wish I could tell you my mind drifted to happy things—our family vacation later this summer, answered prayers, or sweet memories.

It didn't.

Instead, my thoughts immediately went to everything that could go wrong. Then, almost without warning, I started replaying all the ways I felt like I had failed as a mom. Yesterday. Last week. Last month. Every mistake seemed louder in the silence of the night.

Shame settled in.

There's something about the middle of the night that can make our biggest fears feel even bigger. The house is quiet, the distractions are gone, and suddenly every insecurity wants our attention.

As I lay there, one thought interrupted the spiral:

If it's worth laying here worrying about, it's worth praying about.

So that's what I did.

I started taking each anxious thought, one at a time, back to God. I talked to Him about my kids. About the places where I felt like I'd fallen short. About the things I couldn't control. About the fears I didn't want to admit out loud.

Was it an instant fix? No.

Did I suddenly feel completely peaceful and drift back to sleep? Not at all.

But something changed.

Instead of carrying those burdens by myself, I handed them to the One who was already awake.

Psalm 121 reminds us that the God who watches over us "will neither slumber nor sleep." While I was lying awake with racing thoughts, God wasn't surprised by my worries, and He wasn't exhausted by them either. He was present and He was listening.

Sometimes we think prayer has to immediately change our circumstances to be effective. But often, prayer first changes the posture of our hearts. It reminds us that we were never meant to carry everything on our own.

If tonight finds you staring at the ceiling while anxiety whispers its worst-case scenarios, maybe this can be your reminder to bring every fear to God.

He may not always give you instant sleep, but He will always meet you with His presence. And sometimes, that's the very rest our hearts need most.
