When You Just Want God to Tell You What's Next

When You Just Want God to Tell You What's Next

If you're anything like me, you probably think, "If I just knew what was coming, I could finally relax."

The other night, a line of storms rolled through our area. My youngest son is incredibly weather-aware for such a little guy. Every clap of thunder gets his attention.

"Dad," he pleaded, "just turn on the TV. If you turn on the weather, I won't be freaked out."

But we know our son.

There wasn't a tornado warning—just a thunderstorm. And we've learned something about him: the more he watches the radar, the more anxious he becomes. Every flashing color, every weather map, every forecast only fuels his imagination. What he thinks will calm him actually makes him more afraid.

As I watched the conversation unfold, I notice when it comes to God, I’m not that different.

How often do I come to God asking for the forecast?

"Lord, just tell me what's going to happen."

"Show me how this situation ends."

"Tell me which decision is the right one."

"I just need to know what's next."

Somewhere along the way, I've convinced myself that if God would simply reveal the future, I wouldn't struggle with fear anymore.

However, information has never brought me peace before. Sometimes it simply gives our anxious minds more details to obsess over.

The peace we're looking for was never meant to come from certainty. It comes from knowing the One who already knows the future.

Isaiah 26:3 says:

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You."

Notice it doesn't say we'll have peace because we know what's coming. It says peace comes because we trust the One who does.

Jesus isn't just someone who gives peace—He is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). His presence can steady our hearts even when our circumstances remain uncertain.

And maybe His presence is enough for today.

"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." — John 14:27
