Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

6 After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias. ²A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick. ³Then Jesus climbed…

When I was a little girl, my mother owned a album by the late gospel singer Danniebelle Hall. On this album, there was a song entitled “Ordinary People”, which references the young boy in our reading today:

…just like that little lad, who gave Jesus all he had…how the multitude was fed, with the fish and the loaves of bread…

But then, she directs her attention to the listener:

what you have may not seem much, but when you yield it to the touch of the Master’s loving hand, yes then you’ll understand, how your life will never be the same…just ordinary people…God uses plain ol’ ordinary people…

We live in such a performance-driven society where so much is predicated on what we believe to be of significance: our looks, our talents, our charisma, our abilities, or business acumen…the list goes on. When we feel as though we fall short, we’re tempted to hide away, keep what we have to ourselves.

And the boy could have done the same…but he stepped up. He gave. it wasn’t much, but he was in the presence of the God Of The How Much More.

When we are brave enough to offer up what we have to Him, we open ourselves up to what I call Ephesians 3:20 moments…multitudes are fed. Lives are touched. Kingdom stuff takes place. That’s always a good thing.

You and I are plain ol’ ordinary people who serve an Extraordinary God. Give what ya got…and watch Him multiply it beyond your wildest dreams for His glory.
