From Overwhelmed to Anchored: My Daily Devotional Routine

From: Betty RockRecently, I’ve found myself feeling overwhelmed when it comes to knowing where to start in my time with God. These days, there are so many options for devotionals and so many opinions on what Bible passages you should be concentrating on. I wanted to use the time I had wisely, but I needed guidance.
Maybe you’re in a similar boat and just need a step-by-step plan.
If so, first of all, I’m so glad I’m not alone in feeling this way and, second of all, I think I’ve got the perfect plan for both of us.
I asked ChatGPT to plan out a routine for my daily devotional time, and it’s been great. Like anything, Chat can be used for good or bad, but in this case, it’s for the best! I’ve stuck with it and feel like I’m really getting the hang of it. Maybe it can work for you too.
Today or tomorrow, lay aside 30 to 40 minutes and follow this plan.
Check it out and see what you think:
1. Prepare the Space (2–3 min)
Light a candle, play soft worship music, or simply take three deep breaths.
Pray: “God, I’m here. I want to meet with You today.”
(This shifts your mind from the day’s chaos into a posture of openness.)
2. Scripture (10–15 min)
Choose a manageable portion: a Psalm, half a chapter in the Gospels, or a short letter passage.
Read it slowly twice.
-
First read: just absorb.
-
Second read: underline or circle any word/phrase that stands out.
Ask 3 questions in your journal:
-
What does this reveal about God’s character?
-
What does this reveal about me/my heart?
-
How can I respond today/tomorrow?
(Tip: If you’re not sure where to start, rotate: Psalms → Gospels → Letters.)
3. Journaling (10–12 min)
-
Gratitude line: Write 3 things you’re thankful for.
-
Honesty line: Write one sentence of raw truth (anger, loneliness, joy, whatever it is).
-
Reflection line: Summarize the verse you read in your own words, like God is speaking it to you personally.
(This builds a record of both your emotions and God’s steady voice.)
4. Prayer (5–10 min)
Follow a simple “3 R’s” format:
-
Reverence: Start with worship (“God, You are good, faithful, steady”).
-
Release: Hand Him your burdens for the day (the “hurt," the ache, the addiction).
-
Request: Ask specifically for what you need today/tomorrow (peace, hope, courage).
End with: “God, I trust You. Meet me even here.”
5. Closing (2–3 min)
Sit in silence for 1–2 minutes.
Repeat one “anchor phrase” (short truths you repeat until they sink in):
Example: “You are near. Even here.”
This settles your heart for the day.
🌟 Optional:
If some days feel too heavy for 30–40 minutes, just do a “mini version”: one Psalm, one line in your journal, and one honest prayer.
Faithfulness matters more than length.
